Broadband Internet network technology based Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) Evolution Data Optimized (EVDO) Rev B has been present in the commercial for the first time in the world through Bali, Indonesia. The service is launched by the CDMA Wireless Service provider Smart Telecom which use Base Transceiver Station (BTS) from China’s ZTE and Qualcomm chipset technology from the United States.
Bali is known as a beautiful place of tourism in the whole world, and it can be central of focus telecommunication when that service launched.
What is the advantages of CDMA EVDO Rev B ? that question should be asked by someone who listens about the news.
Just for review again that CDMA 2000 1x EV-DO is first step evolution from CDMA 2000 1x. CDMA 2000 1x spesification is is defined by 3G ( 3rd Generation ) standard, 3GPP2 ( 3rd Generation Partnership Project 2 ). CDMA EV-DO transmit voice and data in separate channel which makes data can be sent until 2.4 Mbps, because of that CDMA EV-DO is known as High Rate Packet Data Air Interface.
CDMA EV-DO consists of some parts : Radio Nodes, Radio Network Controller ( RNC ) and Packet Data Serving Node ( PDSN ). CDMA 2000 1x EV-DO has different physical layer with CDMA 2000 1x, so we need additional hardware separately from CDMA 2000 1x network existing. We can say that we have different Mobile Subscribe ( MS ) as Access Terminal ( AT ), and Access Network ( AN ) which consists of Base Transceiver Station ( BTS ) and Base Station Controller ( BSC ). Access Network is an equipment which provide data connectivity between Packet Switch Data Network (PDSN) and Access Terminal ( AT ). So you need to think about investment fee for upgrading your network to CDMA 2000 1x EV-DO.
If we divide CDMA 2000 1x evolution family, we can get like this :
- CDMA 2000 1x as first Generatiom
- CDMA 2000 1x EV-DO consists of Release 0, Revision A ( Rev A ), and Revision B ( Rev B)
- CDMA 2000 EV-DV ( Evolution Data and Voice )
- Ultra Mobile Broadband (UMB)
Same like 3G GSM ( Global System for Mobile Communications ), CDMA EVDO has more advantages which can give services like video messaging, video streaming, caller tunes, song ID and push to talk which shows high speed data communications. You need Access Terminal or Mobile phone which has already supported CDMA 2000 1x EV-DO. But if you just want to use data communication only, you need data card or modem which plugged in to your laptop or PC.
CDMA 2000 1x EV-DO Rev B is next evolution of CDMA EV-DO 2000 1x Rev A which offers maximum data speed 9.3 Mbps for downlink and 5.4 Mbps for uplink., where as CDMA CDMA EV-DO 2000 1x Rev A only has 3.8 Mbps for downlink and 1.8 Mbps for uplink.
A significant advantage of EV-DO over competing technologies is that it uses the same broadcasting frequencies as existing CDMA networks.Why it becomes benefit ? because purchasing spectrum frequency from telecommunication regulator is very expensive. The major CDMA EV-DO deployments in the US are by Verizon and Sprint, and there is also a large network in Korea. Currently CDMA EV-DO is not too impact at Europe or major Asian Markets, because they using 3G GSM standard, that is WCDMA.
But I think the development and CDMA 2000 1x EV-DO is very fast and can make good competition or break 3G GSM completely. CDMA 2000 1x EV-DO Rev B can support multi-carrier evolution from Rev A specification. Rev B can enhance high rates per carrier which up to 4.9 Mbps downlink per carrier, and support 2 or 3 carriers for a peak rate of 14.7 Mbps. So imagine about the high speed of CDMA EV-DO Rev B, with reduce latency it can improve data speed broadband network.
How about the competition with 3G GSM standard like High-Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA) which offers high speed data until 7.2 Mbps ? Please look again, that HSDPA technology doesn’t separate data and voice channel, so you can see that data connection should have smaller bandwidth if network used by voice channel, moreover in busy hour.
