This is just summary how to install application in your blackberry phone. Sometimes we ask about what kind of application format provided by Blackberry. If I browsing Internet, and want to install the application in my Blackberry phone, what kind of application format I should donwload and how to install it ?
This is based on my experienced using Blackberry. People used to have mobile phones with Java or Symbian based. So they just choose and install the application which support in the mobile phones.
Installing application in Blackberry need some steps to do and choose right application format. The application format of Blackberry you can find are :
- *.alx
- *.cod
- *.jad
*.alx can be installed using your Blackberry Desktop Manager. *.cod is main program can be installed to our Blackberry, which consists of some files already zipped into one file. Commonly file extenstion *.jad available together with *.cod.
Install application format *.alx using Blackberry Desktop Manager
File format *.alx can be downloaded into your PC / laptop folder and you can use you Blackberry Desktop Manager and choose application loader like picture below :

Sometimes after you add *.alx using your application loader, you get error message like this :
“No System Software was found for your handheld”, first you have to check your blackberry OS, because you Blackberry Desktop Manager cannot talk to your Blackberry. Just see Desktop Manager Help–>About like this :

Another error you may have is ” No additional applications for your handheld were found”, it means your Blackberry Desktop Manager cannot see your application in your folder PC, make sure all file application in same folder. For example some application format extension *.alx and *.cod should be in same folder.
The last, if you are a BES subscriber make sure that your BES administrator give you permission to install application in your Blackberry.
Install application format *.jad *.cod via Blackberry handset and Over the Air ( OTA )
You can download application format *.jad dan *.cod in same folder and copy it to your Blackberry memory phone or directly to your microSD memory card.
In your Blackberry, just choose menu Media –> click Blackberry button ( next to you call button ) –> explore and find out your application saved.
If already found, just click your *.jad and you will follow the URL given to be downloaded via OTA.
But if file *.cod application already exist in same folder with your *.jad you dont need to download just install it via your microSD.
The other way is you just go to URL via your Blackberry using OTA ( Over the Air ). For example you can download blackberry application using URL here
