Based on press releases Depkominfo RI ( Communication and informatics Department of Indonesia ) No. 203 /PIH/KOMINFO/10/2009 about basic frame of digital television broadcasting terestrial implementation, Indonesia will implement digital television in 2015 and migrate from analog television after 4 consortium testing on August, 3rd 2009.
Socialization wil be continued to be implemented on time in 2015. Digital technology application had been trial tested on 2000, done in implementation which adapted and adjusted in associated country. Digital TV must be efficient and economical when it is implemented.
There three standard of Digital Television in the world, they are DTV ( Digital Television ) used by american standard, DVB-T ( Digital Video Broadcasting Terrestrial) used in European country, and ISDB-T ( Integrated Services Digital Broadcasting Terrestrial ). So what standard will be implemented in Indonesia ?
Digital Television with terresterial in USA divided into two categories : HDTV ( High Definition Television ) and SDTV ( Standard Definition TV ). HDTV uses format 1280x 720 pixels or 1920 x 1080 pixels which uses 16:9 aspect ratio, whereas SDTV uses 4:3 aspect ratio which uses 640×480 fomat in NTSC, and uses 720×576 (rescaled to 768 × 576) in PAL. SDTV uses 16:9 broadcast in 704×480 ( rescaled to 848 x 480 ) format in NTSC, and 720×576 ( rescaled to 1024x 576 ) in PAL.
DVB-T ( Digital Videio Broadcasting – Terrestrial ) is European-based consortium standard for the broadcast tranmission which compresses digital audio, video in MPEG tansport stream.This is also including HDTV and has vast improvement over old analog signals getting some helpful upgrades.
Same with DVB-T , ISDB-T has adopted MPEG-2 video and audio compression system. The countries using this standard is Japan, Brasil. This technology claimed is best standard for mobile subscriber and move from one area to another. This technic related with doppler effect in wave length of mobile receiver related to broadcasting source.
Indonesia will adopt DVB-T standard in 2015, which has already implemented in many countries. So we have to migrate form old analog television to digital television. The digital television has many advantages compared with analog television technology. If we compare analog and digital television, we have bandwidth ratio is 1:6. It means if inalog we need bandwidth 8 Mhz in one channel transmission, we have 6 until 8 times in one channel transmission using multiplex system. This is a benefit for broadcasting operator which can use 1 carried together with some channels.
For customers, there is significant in picture quality, accuration and high resolution, avoid shadowing effect in analog system.
The question is if we only have analog TV, can we use it for digital broadcasting channel ? The answer is yes. You can use digital to analog converter box, and just connect to your sattelite or cable TV by doing subscription.
So we can conclude that analog TV needs additional equipment : a digital to analog converter box to receive over the air television and display the digital broadcasts. The lack is maybe picture quality which is not in full digital quality, because the converter box just allow you to receive picture, but you are not allowed displaying high quality picture best as in digital television.
The additional equipment is just added to avoid you in shock and suprise, and get rid people complain because they have to change all their analog television suddenly when digital television operated and changes analog television broadcasting. So just wait for hish quality picture television broadcasting, and hope it has low cost : >
