Anonymous & Fake SMS in Nasrudin murder Case

It is about murder case Director of PT Putra Rajawali Banjaran (PRB), Zulkarnaen Nasrudin in the court case continued Antasari in South Jakarta, District court Jalan Ampera Raya in thursday, December 17 th 2009.
In that court, two expert witnesses Information Technology ( IT ) invited to prove and state about SMS technology suspected in the case, they are ITB professors Agung Harsoyo and Aldo Agustian.

The presence of Agung and Aldo is relating to allegation that mentions prosecutor, Antasari SMS threat sent to Nasrudin. SMS that reads, “Sorry this problem known only by us, if it comes blow up, you will know the concequences”.

Antasari has denied the allegations in court. Agung said at the trial that in a state on, off, or even damaged a mobile phone can still send SMS text message with many several ways.

Further, Agung said that there are six possibilites to send SMS to mobile subscriber, so we can decide whether this SMS fake or original SMS from sender:

  1. SMS sent by original number and transparent number, in this case mobile subscriber got message from number he’s already known. From log and history in mobile operator associated, we can know details about sender, from which location he sent, time sent, IMSI or MIN number. We can decide this is the original SMS text message.
  2. SMS sent to itself number. It means SMS text message sent to same number, it  just proves that a mobile phone can be a sender and receiver simultaneously.
  3. SMS sent by system which connected to SMS Center. As technically it was sent by ESME ( External Shortcode Messaging Entity ), please see again in my previous posting about “How SMS works“.
What we should see deeply here is about authentication mobile sender in SMS Gateway, how it works, we can check it further together with mobile operator related.
According to my opinion, a mobile operator should restrict about security sending and receiving message entity from ESME. It is about Service Level Agreement policy already signed between mobile operator and ESME. May be you know about free sms in some web site application. It is about ESME application which connect to some mobile operator.
  4. SMS sent by using fake BTS ( Base Transceiver Station ) which already tapped sender number which is not in inactive mode. This is related about technology used by  mobile operator whether CDMA or GSM. It is needed high skilled and expert technique to do this, beside that is needed high cost to do that.
In CDMA mode, we have to break down the code sent by sender, and it is not easy way.
  5. SMS sent by cloned number. It is using original mobile operator network. It is like twin number to do authentication to mobile operator network, which another number is inactive. This is not network related technique, it is just SIM card cloning technology.
  6. SMS sent by somebody doing in operation technique in mobile operator. If you are an messaging or SMS engineer, you can touch SMS center and doing some manipulation sender number easily, modified text message sent. A mobile operator should audit this history activity and can make good reporting to void this case.
Be careful with vendor which is working in your company, they can use your network without pay it, so just secure your network.

So, please be careful if you receive message from somebody you doest know. If your mobile phone borrowed by somebody, just take care it. In my opinion, please keep your mobile phone just in your pocket, dont lend it to someone you dont know well, there are some SMS crime in your environment : )
