I just want to overview the basic network planning and dimensioning in telecommunication network.
I think they are not only need by Telecom Operator, but also needed by mobile subscribers to get their optimized network. It it can be reached, mobile subscriber can enjoy their services such as calling and sending message SMS smoothly and will achieve customer satisfaction.
According to my opinion, the direction and goal a cellular telecommunication companies is determined by their network planning engineer.
What they plan at the moment, what they calculates about traffics called as dimensioning will determined their network ability to handle traffic probability in the future.In other words, the expected needs will be meet economically aim of the operator. So they can be able meeting the customers need, will have customer satisfaction, and the final is increasing of mobile subscriber which trust and loyal to telecommunication operator because of the Quality of Services ( QoS ) they get.
To do that, a network planner should understand about traffic characteristics what they handle, they are :
1. Traffic aspects which include about traffic data collection which is consists of traffic measurement, the amount and subscriber distribution, prediction and forecasting services scenario will be run and foreasting about volume and traffic profile .
2. Economic policy that made the company. It will determine from the beginning the direction of network planning. How big and network expansion based on budget of the operator. If your company policy is about Quality of Service important, you dont think about the budget, just design the network infrastructure in best quality, wide network expansion and coverage. But, if your company policy is budget operator, we have to calculate the network design based on minimalize network expansion and make priority to decide the potential subscriber growth in a area, but still have network optimization in order to get strongth move with the competitors.
3. Technical Aspect to implement the network planning, planning implementation with high skilled engineer who commits works and monitor about the network 24 hours a day, network fault management, and the last is network performance which is count daily to result best report performance.
The good company should device network division into some parts which concentrate to their jobs. The operation jobs should not be mixed with the project implementation. Same with that, network performance analysis should determined in top layer about network condition before report it to planning and engineering team, which calculate about network traffic calculation and dimensioning.
4. Network optimization and dimensioning , it is about current condition and future plan. What we are doing at the moment will determine the next condition. Subscriber growth will force network designer to expand their network. If not, the network will have congestion condition will impact the degradation of Quality of Services. It it happen, mobile subscriber will move to other operator which offers better services.
So how about the steps for network planning and dimensioning ? First we have to know about traffic characteristics, topology design of network, network shyntesis, network realization, network routing and distribution which determined based on market competition, cooperation and domination, subscriber demand, standard and technology taken, and of course from company budget. In the next article, I will desribe basic methodology about network planning and dimensioning.
